Lots of people believe that the indwelling of the Holy Spirit happens when you "ask Jesus into your heart" (at the point of salvation) Others believe that Salvation and the "baptism of/with the Holy Spirit" are two separate things, and with the receiving of the Holy Spirit one can also pray in tongues. I'm interested in what everyone believes concerning this and their opinion on praying in tongues. No, it's not a REAL debate, but this is where I believe it belongs because it can turn into a debate later on Keep it nice, everyone and, Mel, just your opinion please, try not to post anything that might get you banned- again.. <_< >_>

I believe in the latter. I believe that after you are saved you are then able to be baptized in the Holy Spirit. I believe that once you do this you receive the ability to pray in tongues. I also believe that different kinds of tongues are a gift of the Holy Spirit that only some receive but also, once you receive the Holy Spirit you are able to pray in tongues (they're two different things).

I believe that salvation is the Holy Spirit's work on our heart to cleanse us from all sin- we invite Jesus Christ to be our Lord and Savior and ask to be forgiven for and cleansed from all sin, then the Spirit does the work. After we are clean we must invite the Spirit to come and dwell in us. Just as we wouldn't fill a dirty cup with fresh water, so also God won't fill a sinner with the Holy Spirit, we must be cleaned (salvation), then we invite Him to fill us (baptism). And I believe, aslo, that praying in tongues is initial evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit (such as happened in Acts 2 when the Spirit fell on the believers, and elsewhere in scripture), and that tongues are for everyone. This is not, however, to be confused with the gift of tongues, which works the same as the other spiritual gifts that are given to Christians as God sees fit. Praying in tongues is between man and God, the gift of tongues is always accompanied with a translation and is for the edification of the church.

oh ok.. what i beleive is that when you get saved you're a christian... but you still have to ask for the holy spirit... that comes later.
i think that sums up what i beleive in a VERY small post... i could go more in detailed, but this subject has always confused me.

i also beleive that when the holy spirit was poured out on the ppl and they were able to speak in tongues that they were able to speak in more than one language and in effect able to preach to other ppl about jesus and about GOD'S kingdom
