Yes, I did eat the candy bar. And I maintain that it was not stealing. If I had, like TEFE had mentioned, "accidentally" scanned it out just to eat it, then it would have been stealing. However, I wasn't the one who put the candy bar in with the rest of the candy to be scanned as outdates.
Once we scan it out as an outdate, we can't sell it. We also can't scan it back in, because that would cause more bookeeping problems. So, either way, the store was not going to lose or gain any profit from that candy bar. This society generates enough trash. Why throw perfectly good food away?
If it wasn't supposed to be scanned as an outdate, the manager shouldn't have put it there to be scanned.

I still think it would be considered wrong. Maybe not "stealing," but still wrong.
I mean unless you had no problem at all as you ate it, I'd say it wasnt the right thing to do. Cuz if you're feeling something might not be right as you're actually eating it, that would say to me that things arent all good. But thats just how my mind works. Unless I know for sure thats its okay, I dont do it. Because it really isnt my decision wether it was alright to do or not. So I dont chance it.

well, i agree with you...
but i will point out one things... just because your doing something and you don't feel right about doing it, doesn't mean it's wrong... you could be going to Church for the first time and the devil will plant thoughts in your mind to try and get you to go away...
though our conciouses, i beleive, can desifer that type of thing...
just pointing out... though i do agree with you about the stealing thing.

I understand. But if you dont know if its right or wrong, why make it your decision? Thats all I'm saying.

Kit has summed up my thoughts; I'm with him on this.
But I'll add: I don't really feel comfortable totally entering this debate since the example that has been given was conducted by one of the members here (Alexis) and when I condemn the behavior, I'm inadvertantly telling Alexis she did something I consider stealing. Which is not really my place since I was not there, and doesn't really help since it's in the past.

My thoughts on the matter are as follows: I would have done the same thing Probably because I'm always hungry, and just because people don't like what you do doesn't mean it's wrong Besides, my parents always told me not to waste stuff, so that's a good enough reason for me

There was a situation at work today that made me think. I was given the assignment of scanning out candy that was expired, then to throw it away. It was already taken off the shelf by a manager and put in carts for me to scan. I didn't pay attention to the dates on the candy since there were two whole cartfulls of it, and I also had to ru the photo department. Anyway, after I scanned all the candy in the two carts, I was taking them to the back to throw it away and noticed a mounds candy bar in one cart wasn't due to expire until December! I was like. o.O It's still good! I had already scanned it out! Which means it was supposed to be thrown away... the reason that we go ahead and scan out the candy that doesn't expire until December is because the upcoming season is SO busy, we won't have time to go through the candy to take out all the outdates. Now, I was hungry and craving chocolate. Is it stealing to take that candy bar and eat it? Nope... It's okay in my book, I would've did the same thing... ATE IT!

I've just researched more on this topic and have come to the conclusion that it would be ok to take it if you had permission from the owner/manager of the store. Otherwise it's wrong.
Stealing isn't just taking something from someone. Yes, that's a big part of it. But stealing also includes taking something that doesn't belong to you.
