There was a situation at work today that made me think. I was given the assignment of scanning out candy that was expired, then to throw it away. It was already taken off the shelf by a manager and put in carts for me to scan.
I didn't pay attention to the dates on the candy since there were two whole cartfulls of it, and I also had to ru the photo department. Anyway, after I scanned all the candy in the two carts, I was taking them to the back to throw it away and noticed a mounds candy bar in one cart wasn't due to expire until December! I was like. o.O It's still good!
I had already scanned it out! Which means it was supposed to be thrown away... the reason that we go ahead and scan out the candy that doesn't expire until December is because the upcoming season is SO busy, we won't have time to go through the candy to take out all the outdates.
Now, I was hungry and craving chocolate.
Is it stealing to take that candy bar and eat it?

Over 11 years, 32 people got laid off for that at my store.
Like taking the extra JoJo's that were supposed to be thrown away at the end of the day.

If it's trash, it isn't the store's either... couldn't it be concidered public property then?

But i've seen poor people go through trash bins behind stores and stuff looking for food. I'm not sure if that's legal or not, but if it is, wouldn't this be similar?

I suppose it depends on the company policy. Sometimes they won't let the employee do that so they won't "accidentally" (I'm sure Alexis wouldn't) do it again and again to get more free stuff.

Yeah, you have a point, since Alexis is an employee in this case

Next time, I'd ask them. Just say, "This is still good, and since we're throwing it away, would you mind if I had it instead?" Unless they're all grouchy, I'm sure they'd say yes.

That's basically the way it's set up at my workplace (I think ). Sometimes, though, if they're just going to throw it away, and I'm leaving, they'll offer it to me. Guess that's the benefit of working there two years.

well, i guess it's the city's property when it's trash ( )... and you may or may not have enough to buy it yourself, but if you don't have enough money and are dirt pore and live on the street than i guess it's ok to rummage thru the trash... ... but otherwise i think someone should just buy it... ... or else i'm a crazy weirdo.

I know that it is legal to take things from store's dumpster, but not to put things in them. It's basically the same thing.
